Sports Logo Spotlight on The 2017 Final Four

The madness hits its peak this weekend! It’s that time of year and today we have three logos to review in regards to the Final Four of the NCAA in hoops and in hockey.

To the collegiate athletes, we think you are awesome. You give it your all and provide a month of thrills.

Let’s begin with the Men’s Final Four which will be held in Glendale Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals.

Unfortunately this logo falls short. The trophy takes center stage on all three logos but you can work around it. Where is the Saguaro Cactus? They are synonymous with the Arizona desert. Where is the rising sun, a tribute to the state? The basketball in the shape of a sun is a nice touch but it’s in the wrong place. I think it would have fit better towards the top of the logo. There is also the issue of Phoenix front and central. If you’ve been to Phoenix, you know that Glendale isn’t right next door. You have a drive ahead of you. This isn’t the first time this has happened. In 2014, the Final Four was at AT&T Stadium, which is in Arlington, not Dallas. The logo said North Texas.

Compare this logo with 2018 Final Four logo that will be in San Antonio.

This logo features the bridge at the famous San Antonio River Walk. The colors are also familiar with the city.

This years Women’s Final Four Logo is a step up from the men.

The trophy is still prominent but this time although it’s in the center, it doesn’t take center stage. The trophy is surrounded by the famous Dallas skyline. One of the highlights of the Dallas skyline is the Bank of America building, which lights up in neon green each night. If the designer used the neon green because of this, it’s a terrific logo touch.

The third and final logo to take a look at is the Frozen Four, college hockey’s equivalent of the Final Four that will take place in Chicago.

The name Frozen Four is a real nice touch. I’ve always loved the name. This logo falls short unfortunately. Chicago is an awesome city with multiple attractions. The Sears Tower could have been part of the skyline along with the John Hancock Center? What about the Chicago River or the famous statue Cloud Gate that thousands take pictures in front of each year. The only link to Chicago could be the slight use of red in the logo, which is similar to Blackhawks red.  That said, it’s one of the major cities in our country and the NCAA should have taken advantage of that. Two hockey sticks isn’t enough for such a premiere event.

Fournette and McCaffrey are Making the Right Decision

The system is hypocritical. You can debate whether or not LSU’s Leonard Fournette and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey should play in their respective Bowl games based on their teammates. That’s fair and I’m sure many will say that they let their team down.

That said, where is the same outrage for Tom Herman? He left Houston to take the Texas job before the Cougars played in the Las Vegas Bowl. He was the hottest coaching candidate and it was talked about all year. On Tuesday, Temple will play in the Military Bowl without their head coach Matt Rhule who is the new coach of Baylor. Once again, I’m fine with this. Better opportunity to improve himself and take care of his family.  My issue is we don’t fault coaches yet we jump on players for thinking of their future.  A sidebar note to ponder. If a coach leaves a school, any monetary penalty they face for leaving while under contract is covered by the next school. Meanwhile, if a player wants to transfer based on a coach leaving, they have to sit out a full year. They were made promises that were broken yet they are penalized.

Both players will not hurt their draft status by sitting out Bowl games. If they play like Jaylon Smith did last year for Notre Dame, you risk ruining a profitable career. Smith was likely a top 5 draft pick. The Cowboys took a chance on him in the 2nd round and it remains to be seen whether or not he will have an NFL career. For those that say, “well it’s rare that something like this happens”.  How many examples will it take? Isn’t one enough. Should we throw out Willis McGahee in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl?

You go to school to prepare yourself for the best career possible. That goes for any occupation including Professional Football Player. Maybe this will start a trend but Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett announced that he will play for the Aggies in the upcoming Texas Bowl against Kansas State. Garrett will be a top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.  I applaud him for making this decision, just like I applaud Fournette and McCaffrey for their decisions.

Schools make millions off of the players. Players should not be criticized for having a say in their future.

I know, I know, this is a serious blog. Usually I’m writing about a cool sports logo. Lets get to that with one of our funny t-shirts that is going over huge with the college crowd.

It’s our only made up city at Awesome Sports Logos. I woke up at 4a with the name Cocksville Blockers in my head. I know, why are things like this running through my brain. I got up and feverishly searched Google looking for Cocksville. Unfortunately my search efforts failed but the name was too good to pass up.

This guy looks like he means business on the football field. I certainly wouldn’t want to take on this Rooster. It’s our best seller and for good reason. When you wear it, people always ask, “OMG, where did you get that?” The OMG part might be made up but I’m trying to sound hip.

Get yourself some Cocksville Blockers. It’s sure to be a closet favorite. Or add it to your list as part of our T-shirt of the Month Club.

You guys are awesome, thanks for reading!

American Pharoah and College Athletes Share Similarities

Taking anything away from American Pharoah would be a disservice. He deserves the attention however I can’t get out of my mind the similarities between this 3 year old and the college athlete.
My mind truly started racing as the owner, trainer and everyone else accepted praise and accolades. Meanwhile the real star of the day was being whisked away. I didn’t even have a chance to see the bed of roses around his neck.  Kind of like college coaches who can do as many interviews as they want after victories, accept the trophies, write motivational books on how to win as a team in which they make millions and when a better offer comes in, skip town. American Pharoah can’t skip town and neither can the college athlete.
Luckily American Pharoah was not injured but if he was, like many race horses, the value is gone and usually so is the horse. Next horse up! Of course if a college athlete is injured, surely the school covers medical costs even after college. Nope, even though the injury happened while playing college sports, the school is not liable. HBO’s Real Sports did an amazing story on this featuring Division One players who can’t work because of their injuries suffered on the football field. The college is no where to be found. In fact, one former University of Washington student Darin Harris returns to campus for treatment of head trauma at the University medical center but that’s on his dime. Can’t work, can barely afford to live yet gave his all to play for the University.
Millions were bet on and against American Pharoah. Millions are bet on college athletics. The horse and athlete, never see a dime.
Think of all the tracks across the country that advertised to come to their facility to watch and bet on American Pharoah. Think of all the billboards in your hometown with a student athletes image on them. No compensation.
American Pharoah merchandise and royalties will make millions for its owner. Schools make millions on merchandise including jerseys but the athlete doesn’t receive anything.
Let’s play a game. Insert American Pharoah or your favorite college athlete into these phrases.
What a stud ______ is.
He’s been running all day, __________ is a Thoroughbred.
___________ is a true beast.

You wouldn’t however yell, American Pharoah is a Horse! That would be silly but I’ve been in the stands when someone makes an outstanding play and heard people yell, “That guy is a Horse”.
We don’t stud humans although the Manning family DNA might fetch a pretty penny on the free market as would the half super athlete, half supermodel DNA of Tom and Giselle.
Trainer Bob Baffert and American Pharoah’s owner Ahmed Zayat from everything I’ve read are well respected. Jockey Victor Espinoza going back into the stables to kiss American Pharoah is a terrific picture that should be shown for years.  Donating his Belmont winnings to City of Hope is even better. The same can be said about many college coaches who do care about their players and their future. Many don’t however and hopefully the push will move forward to give the college athlete compensation, something they so richly deserve.
Speaking of studs and horse racing, we have a t-shirt that we think American Pharoah himself would even enjoy. It’s the Lexington Studs awesome t-shirt.
Lexington, Kentucky is the home of Keeneland, one of the most prestigious horse racing facilities in this world. This ferocious looking horse has steam coming from his nose waiting to break out of the gate. We consider you a stud if you purchase this super cool, funny Lexington sports t-shirt. It's a great feeling when people come up to you and say, "that's awesome”.
Thanks for reading and once again, congrats to American Pharoah!
