El Paso Hits a Home Run with Their New Awesome Sports Logo

Huge Awesome Sports Logos props to MountainStar Sports Group for naming their new Triple A team in El Paso the Chihuahuas. To select the name, they did a contest and received more than 5,000 entries but Chihuahuas went to the top of the list.

I love this logo and so do El Paso and a lot of other people. According to the El Paso Times, the team has already sold merchandise in 35 different states, Canada and Mexico. This is a perfect example of why more teams need to be original. Our goal at Awesome Sports Logos is to bring back the fun and creativity to sports logos and the El Paso Chihuahuas fall right in line with that goal.

Here’s why this logo makes sense. El Paso is part of the Chihuahuan desert. The Mexican state of Chihuahua borders El Paso, the popularity of small dogs in the U.S. is off the charts and this logo appeals to kids and family, something that minor league baseball is all about.
The buzz is absolutely huge on this logo and it should be. ESPN and CNN have run stories on the new name and logo. El Paso baseball has received more publicity than ever before and you can bet on this logo leading the way with merchandise sales. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a trend. Hopefully other cities will see the upcoming success of El Paso and will come up with creative sports logos.

We received  a couple of emails this week asking if we were mad that El Paso copied one of our more popular logos, the Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies. There was no copying involved and a Chiweenie is in the Chihuahua family but it’s not the same pooch. Their logo is awesome and we think our logo is awesome. I do appreciate it though because that means our logo looks like the pros and that’s a complement to our designers. I love it when docile animals become vicious in sports logos. It’s funny and creative.

We also have an El Paso team, the El Paso Luchadores. We love this basketball logo that mixes in the rich history of the Luchadores.

Thanks so much for reading and go El Paso Chihuahuas! We’re rooting for you!!

The Mystery of the Mask with this Awesome Sports Logos T-shirt

By Gavin Spittle

This awesome t-shirt brings back so many childhood memories. My father would take me to the old Boston Garden to see wrestling. I remember watching the Masked Superstar take on Bob Backlund. My favorite part was when they introduced him, they would say, “From Parts Unknown, Weight Unknown.” I asked my Dad how they didn’t know where he was from? I’ve often wanted to put “Parts Unknown” on my W-2 to see if it would work for me like it did for the Masked Superstar. I also remember the most famous Luchador, Mil Máscaras. This amazing high flyer is widely considered both in Mexico and America as the greatest masked wrestler of all time. Today’s most famous example is the high flyer Rey Mysterio Jr. I had the honor of meeting Rey Mysterio and he is a perfect example of someone who cherishes the history of the mask. And if you’re wondering was he wearing the mask when I greeted him at the elevator? Of course he was.

It’s amazing to think that you have to wear a mask all of the time for the integrity and mystery of the character. That’s how serious this is. I’m sure there are exceptions like cashing your check at the bank or going through TSA where being identified is probably the safer bet. In those cases, taking off the mask for five minutes might save you 3-5 years elsewhere.

I own a Mil Máscaras mask that was given to me by the Widowmaker, a local wrestler in Dallas. I know it’s tough to imagine that a guy named Widowmaker is a sweetheart but he truly was really nice. Then I threw a house party one night and dawned on the mask. People loved it and took a lot of pictures. Those pictures made the rounds on the internet. The Widowmaker saw those pictures. To speed up this story, no I did not get put in the sleeper hold or body slammed into the concrete but I heard from Widowmaker. To those future people who meet anyone named Widowmaker.  Apologize vehemently!!  Widowmaker was gracious but looking back I realized that I disrespected the mask. That’s how much it means to these guys.

Masks have been used in wrestling dating all the way back to the early 20th century. You will most commonly see the Luchadore mask in Mexico where they hold the most historical significance including being used by the Aztecs. They are worn in Mexico as a tribute and a good number of young Mexican wrestlers start their careers as masked wrestlers.

El Paso has a rich latino history and part of that history involves one of the most famous families in wrestling, the Guerrero family. Eddie Guerrero, one of the most popular and respected luchadores of all time was born and raised in El Paso. Unfortunately, Guerrero passed away as a result of acute heart failure. Thanks for the memories Mr. Guerrero, you were a true entertainer.

Mr. Widow Maker, this shirt is also dedicated to you. With this awesome t-shirt, I am fulfilling my promise of continuing the tradition of respecting the mask!

Thanks for reading, you guys are Awesome!
