The Sports Logo Story Behind The Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies

Here at Awesome Sports Logos, we are huge dog lovers. In fact, here is our mascot that we found wandering the street at midnight. Now he rules the offices of Awesome Sports Logos with unlimited bones and love.

We have another dog in the office but this one is in the form of an awesome t-shirt. We introduce you to the Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies.

So what exactly is a Chiweenie? Here is the official definition from

A cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund, the Chiweenie is a small breed, sometimes with long, floppy Dachshund ears. They tend to be happy, easy going dogs … although they need a lot of love and attention when they're young.

So of all the dog breeds, why did we pick the Chiweenie? Google is actually the key to this storyline. In our research for various sports logos, this Chiweenies logo jumped out to me. With a few clicks, I was able to contact the designer Erica who was a college student. One of her class projects was to take a docile creature and make it into a vicious sports logo. Erica nailed it. She deserved an A+ on this project. She also designed our New Orleans Curse awesome basketball t-shirt.

It was such a great feeling to see our Chiweenies logo used as an example in a local El Paso story when it was revealed that one of the five finalists for the new El Paso baseball team was the El Paso Chihuahuas. That name ended up not only winning, it’s now one of the leading minor league baseball merchandise sellers in the country. If you walk into El Paso Airport, you can’t miss seeing Chihuahuas gear.

So if you happen to be a dog lover and a lover of sports logos like we are, treat yourself to the Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies. It’s sure to become a closet favorite. Even better, add the Chiweenies and the New Orleans Curse to the list of our T-shirt of the Month Club. Sweet discounts with free shipping. You pick the t-shirts and if you are giving our T-shirt of the Month Club as a gift, we are happy to personalize the experience at no extra charge. We want this to be an awesome experience.

Thanks as always for your support. Go Chiweenies!

My Favorite Dog Sports Logos

Dogs are awesome! We all know that and they certainly aren’t just “Man’s Best Friend”. I witness that every night at bedtime. The order of space in our bed is wife, dog and whatever sliver is left to squeeze into, I take. I’m sure I’m not the only one that faces this situation. That being said, we can’t say enough about our joyful animal friends and we also can’t say enough about Dog Sports Logos. Here are a few of our favorites.

The El Paso Chihuahuas

 Logo photos courtesy of

Back in 2014, the Padres moved their AAA team from Tucson to El Paso. With that came a new stadium and a new sports logo and boy did it take off. El Paso loves their Chihuahuas. Their gear is at the airport, at shopping malls and it has quickly become the best selling minor league baseball logo. Go Chihuahuas!

 The Jackson Generals

The Generals are based in Jackson Tennessee and are the AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners in the Southern League. Now that’s a long call up trip from Jackson to Seattle. Terrific artistry by the designer on this sports logo. If you pictured a dog General, it would look like “Sarge” who is the Generals mascot. I also love the replacement of chewing on a bat instead of a bone. Go Generals!

The Batavia Muckdogs

Baseball has been in Batavia New York since 1961. The Muckdogs are the Single A affiliate of the Florida Marlins in the New York Penn League. So what the heck is a Muckdog? Muck is a form of soil found in this part of New York. The name Muckdog came from a fan contest back in 1998. I like this logo for several reasons. Muck regionalizes the logo’s heritage. Crafty work by this sports logo designer making the broken fence into an “M” with a tough looking pooch breaking through.

The Midland RockHounds

Midland is the AA affiliate of the Oakland A’s in the Texas League. In a 2014 interview with the awesome website, Rockhounds PR man Brian Smith at the time said that the name is a nickname for a Geologist. Midland Texas is serious oil country, thus the hardhat on the dog and if you look real close, you can see some Oil Derrick’s in the background.

The Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies

We are biased on this one because it’s one of our logos. This was actually a school project for one of our logo designers. She was given the task of creating a ferocious sports logo out of a docile creature and she nailed it with this cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund. We needed to find a location and Beverly Hills just seemed like the place you would find a Chiweenie peeking outside of a purse. Dog lovers will certainly strike up some conversations by wearing this awesome t-shirt. Even better, get your Chiweenies t-shirt at a discount price by subscribing to our T-shirt of the Month Club. Free shipping and discount prices. It also makes your trip to the mailbox easier because it’s something other than a bill. Now that’s awesome.

Have a great day and be sure to support your local animal shelters to help out dogs and other animals in need.

You are awesome!

Brandiose is Bringing Back the Fun and Creativity to Sports Logos

The motto when I started Awesome Sports Logos was to bring the fun and creativity back to sports logos. Hopefully you have found several of our logos creative with some great local meaning behind them. That’s what logos should be about.
I’ve been meaning to write about this company for a while because they deserve a lot of credit for what they have done. Brandiose is knocking it out of the park with some of their sports logos. You won’t see a bland logo come out of this company. Their logos are unique with rich local history. How do they know that history? Because they visit the market, speak with the teams and the locals. They do more than just a Google or Wikipedia search to find out the local history. Here are some of my favorite logos that Brandiose has come up with.
The El Paso Chihuahuas

Now one of the top selling Minor League Logos, it was awesome to fly into El Paso International Airport and see several stores proudly selling Chihuahuas merchandise.

The Biloxi Shuckers
The original “Seafood Capital of the World is highlighted with this logo. It’s awesome how they made a mollusk look so serious.  Anyone can make a lion look ferocious but Brandiose can make an oyster look like a .330 hitter with some pop in that bat.

The Spokane Indians

This once again highlights the diversity of Brandiose. This is a perfect example of embracing the culture and history of an area. This logo’s lettering is in Salish, the language of the Spokane Tribe.  In an era where many Indian logos are disappearing, this is a rare instance where the tribe gave their blessing on this logo. I’m fascinated with the Salish lettering and coupled with the history, this is what an Awesome Sports Logo is all about.

The Akron RubberDucks
Akron is the Rubber Capitol of the World. I love the weaving in of a mean looking Rubber Duck with tire tracks. We had the same concept with our Akron Rubbers Logo when we made our racing t-shirt.
Here are two of their latest projects, the Hartford Yard Goats and the Norfolk Tides.
Baseball is returning to Hartford for the first time since 1952. The new team did a “name the team” contest and Yard Goats was the choice. It was up to Brandiose to come up with the logo and to me, they nailed it. I especially love the logo colors. According the Yard Goats website, they pay tribute to the Hartford Whalers which I think is an awesome detail.
Some were upset when the Norfolk Tides changed their logo. I can’t understand why. The wave sports logo to me was just there. I thought it was a really cool idea to embrace the history of the team by keeping the name but making the logo fresh and marketable. This logo also continues to embrace what Norfolk is all about. I can guarantee that merchandise sales will go up in Norfolk.
Kudos to you Brandiose! You are bringing back the fun and creativity back to sports logos and doing it the right way. We think you are awesome!
Of our baseball logos, the one we get asked, “Is that a real baseball team” is our Idaho Taters cool t-shirt. It was our first logo created and is still one of our favorites. You can pick up the Taters and add it to the list as part of our T-shirt of the Month Club.
Thanks as always for reading, you guys are awesome!
Happy New Year!!

How the El Paso Chihuahuas are Knocking it Out of the Park

Sometimes there is a bigger picture for a sports logo and a perfect example is happening in El Paso, Texas. In their first season, the El Paso Chihuahuas have drawn a lot of attention for their sports logo, unique concessions and for their promotions. They are everything a minor league team should be. In one section you can get Buffalo Chicken and Waffles. In another you can sink into a Flamethrower Burger Basket which features ghost peppers which hit you two times if you know what I’m saying. Their logo is out of the box and unique. The Chihuahua hat was voted “best cap in the minors”. They feature a brand new stadium in the heart of Downtown El Paso and as of this blog, they are 4th in the Pacific League in attendance.

The latest Chihuahuas promotion has created buzz across the country. On August 3rd as part of “Bark at the Park”, El Paso will be wearing these unique uniforms against the Reno Aces.

It’s not just for publicity. After the game, each jersey will be auctioned off to benefit the Humane Society of El Paso. Now that’s awesome stuff. How awesome is it that a sports logo theme can embrace the community for a great cause. Congratulations Chihuahuas! Your sports logo is the talk of baseball and for good reason. Hopefully your success will encourage other teams to think out of the box when it comes to naming a team and creating their logo.

Before the Chihuahuas released their logo, we had our own cute pooch logo. In fact, when it was announced that the Chihuahuas was a finalist as an El Paso logo, one local magazine published our logo as an example. Here is the Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies t-shirt worn by Hollywood actress Amy Vorpahl.

We also featured our own El Paso T-shirt which is a basketball sports logo which highlights the deep history of Latino wrestling. It’s the El Paso Luchadores awesome t-shirt!

Thanks as always for reading. Awesome job supporting your local Chihuahuas El Paso!
