The Sports Illustrated Cover Curse Is Real

I know it’s hard to believe but back before the World Wide Web, we used to huddle to read our favorite magazines, one of which was Sports Illustrated.

When I found out that one of my favorite teams or athletes were on the cover, I ran to my corner store, (I really did run, too young for a car) to pick up SI.  Then I heard about the Sports Illustrated cover curse.

Earlier this year, the New York Times did a great recap of the curse and several sports moments that took a turn after the cover came out. The article includes Pete Rose’s chase for the DiMaggio’s ending after he appeared on the cover. Tom Brady hits the 2008 Sports Illustrated cover for their NFL preview. In week 1, he tears up his MCL and ACL for the first and only major injury in his NFL career. This is a terrific article that dives into the curse. You can read it here.

Here are a few of the most recent curses that I’ve noticed.

 Covers courtesy of Sports Illustrated

After beating the Rangers in a thrilling five game series in 2015 this cover hit the day after. The Blue Jays got hit themselves immediately by the Kansas City Royals who went on to become World Champions.

How about the Houston Astros to start this baseball season? Sports Illustrated not only put them on the cover, they sped up their rebuilding and said that the Astros will win the World Series.

I think the Cubs and Indians would disagree with this prediction as I write this. The Astros failed to make the playoffs and were a huge disappointment to many. They started 7-17 and played catch up the rest of the way finishing just above .500 with 84 wins.

That brings us to the latest cover and if you are an Oklahoma City Thunder fan, you are not going to like this.

Hopefully Russell Westbrook stays healthy but if something happens, you know the fingers would be pointing towards this cover.

The flip side is that Sports Illustrated has put out thousands of covers over the years where nothing has happened. That said, no one remembers the Michael Jordan misses at the buzzer, only the numerous game winning shots. Thus is the case here with the SI cover.  That said, I’m a superstitious guy so if I was an athlete, I’d stay away.

One thing that athletes aren’t superstitious about is wearing our Awesome Sports Logos t-shirts.  Check out pitcher Derek Holland looking good in our Cocksville Blockers awesome t-shirt.

Here is former pitcher Mike Bacsik looking good in several of our t-shirts.

Three time Super Bowl Champion Ted Johnson had some fun with me wearing our El Paso Luchadores t-shirt. Thank goodness we had his size.

You certainly don’t need to be an athlete to wear our t-shirts.  In fact, all of us arm chair Quarterbacks look good. Grab yourself some awesome and remember, we offer even more savings with our t-shirt of the month club.

Thanks as always for reading!

Time for a New Cleveland Cavaliers Logo

The NBA season will begin in just a couple of weeks. It seems like just yesterday that we were watching the Cleveland Cavaliers come back from being down 3-1 in the series, to win a close Game 7 and become the Finals Champions for the first time in franchise history. In what was a rematch of the previous year’s Finals, the Cavs and the Golden State Warriors faced off in a heated back and forth series. LeBron James emerged from the Finals as MVP, and secured his place among talks of best players in the game. He’ll look to lead the Cavs to another run at the Finals this season.

The team’s center, Tristan Thompson, has already missed the first preseason game, and is scheduled to miss more. Reports indicate that he has a sore left foot. Thompson hasn’t missed a game in four seasons, and started every game in Cleveland’s amazing Finals Championship season. Also circling the water cooler, will the club keep Kevin Love? They just signed JR Smith to a new deal according to ESPN.

Whether the Cleveland makes it to their third-straight Finals or not, whether they become back-to-back Champions or not, they have certainly become a force to be reckoned with on the court. With such a reputation behind them, and with dominance on their mind for the future, I say the Cavs are in need of a new team image. Let’s see what they’re working with these days.

Logo courtesy of

Let’s get right to the point. It isn’t a great logo. By definition, the adjective form of the word cavalier means “showing a lack of proper concern”. Well, the team has shown a definite lack of concern in keeping up with awesome logos in today’s sports world. I can see where they are trying to go with this look, displaying a 17th Century sword in an attempt to be the “swordsman” or “knight on horseback” version of the word cavalier, but that’s really all they have working for them.

The text font is plain, the basketball in the background is plain and the gold outlining of the whole image seems off-putting. Frankly, it seems too easy for a professional NBA team. If this was the look of a D-League team, or some other minor league sports franchise, I could let this slip by. For a team considered in the top tier of their sport, they need a logo that screams just that.

We have one logo in particular that is just SCREAMING awesome. The Parque Lefevre Canguros are rocking their look!

Parque Lefevre is a district in Panama. Canguros is the Spanish word for kangaroos, but we can promise you that there are no kangaroos hopping around in this district. Sometimes team names have no explanation and that’s what is so cool about sports logos.

But seriously, who doesn’t love the kangaroo and why wouldn’t you want wear it with pride? We do, and that’s why we’re glad we have this awesome Parque Lefevre sports t-shirt as part of our collection. Be sure to add this super-soft tee to your t-shirt of the month club rotation! Get more details on that awesome deal right here.

Cam Newton Brings Concussions Back to the Forefront

The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off in the coveted Monday Night Football slot this past week. The game went on without the Panthers quarterback, three-time Pro Bowler and former NFL MVP Cam Newton. He suffered from a concussion in his previous game, when he took a (legal) hit from Atlanta Falcons linebacker Deion Jones late in the game, attempting to run in a two-point conversion. Newton is no stranger to taking hard hits to the head, as he has already been the seeming target for multiple helmet-to-helmet attacks. Earlier in the season, two players from the Denver Broncos received fines for hits they delivered to Newton’s head.

The National Football League is no stranger to dealing with player’s getting concussions. The league has instituted a “concussion protocol” in an attempt to better protect the health of players. The protocol uses various unaffiliated doctors and medical personnel, who use a variety of techniques and observational tactics, to determine if a player might have received a concussion or expressed concussion-like symptoms. Team trainers and doctors are also supposed to be monitoring for these same things, using instant replay on the jumbotrons and tablets at their sides. The issue with this protocol is lack of accountability.

Last season, Case Keenum was running the (then) St. Louis Rams offense. The quarterback took a hard hit in a late, last minute drive. Keenum was phased, displaying what many thought were symptoms of a concussion. Instead of being removed from the game, to receive proper testing and evaluation, the Rams coaching staff put him back in the game. The NFL remained silent on this issue. The team received no penalty or punishment for the clear lack of concern for a player’s health. Instead, the league waited until the following offseason, and implanted harsher penalties for teams that ignore the concussion protocol rules.

If the league didn’t penalize the Rams during the Keenum incident, why would they penalize a franchise now? This issue isn’t going away and the biggest question for the NFL and Players Association, is there a resolution in the future?

Let’s get on to something happier on the football field, shall we? Take a look at this super soft awesome Nashville Bootleggers t-shirt.

Nashville is an awesome town, one of our favorites. We wanted to celebrate the city and its history which includes some bootlegging. Prohibition was lifted in 1933 but before that, some serious Tennessee Whiskey and Moonshine was being passed around in secrecy. This logo shows a bootlegger giving you the “Heisman” pose but instead of a football, he’s cradling a whiskey barrel. We hope you enjoy this awesome sports logo.

Don’t forget, there are two awesome ways to get discounts on our t-shirts. If you buy 3 of our t-shirts, you get the 4th free. Just use the coupon code 3ThenFree when checking out. Our Top 3 Major League Lacrosse Sports Logos

Lacrosse. It’s a sport that goes almost completely ignored in the United States. While the Northeastern part of the country may love it, the majority of the U.S. couldn’t tell you anything about it. Major League Lacrosse, a nine team lacrosse league here in the States, averaged just 4,268 spectators per game in their 2016 season. That statistic alone should prove that the sport doesn’t get a lot of attention. Honestly, that’s a shame. Lacrosse is extremely fun to watch, being a completely full contact sport and all. Of course, here at Awesome Sports Logos, we managed to find some totally awesome team logos in the MLL as well! Let’s see just how awesome these logos are.

Logos Courtesy of

Even people who know nothing about lacrosse can see the true awesomeness of this logo. The Rochester Rattlers may have had a shaky history in the MLL, but their look has never wavered. The best part of this logo is in the snake. When some snakes get angry, they stretch out the skin around their neck, to appear bigger and meaner. That’s exactly what’s happening right here in this logo. Where the stretched out skin would be, we see the netting of a lacrosse stick. This rattler is angry, and he means business on the field. We don’t go into font details a whole lot when discussing logos, but I think the Rattlers picked the perfect font for the script of their name. It isn’t boring and plain. It looks edgy and modern. The Rattlers have one awesome logo!

This reminds me of our awesome t-shirt that we feature, the Las Vegas Snake Eyes!
I love when sports teams can work in the tools of their game into a logo. The Boston Cannons have done this in a very cool way.
The background of their logo is the netting of a lacrosse stick just like the Rattlers, shouting out loud and proud just what they are playing. Sitting front and center are crossed cannons. This is an intimidation factor, plain and simple. It screams that Boston is coming, prepared for war on the field. Of course, just below the crossed cannons sits what one would assume is a cannon ball. BUT, I would challenge that thought. My bet is on it being a lacrosse ball. The whole logo now makes sense! Just like a cannon firing in war, the Boston Cannons plan on using their sticks to fire that ball right into the back of the net! It’s metaphorical. It’s awesome.
Even though it's a baseball logo, you can actually hear this logo from the fans in the stands at the Cannons games. Who doesn't love a good accent, especially a Boston Accent!

The Atlanta Blaze had their first season in Major League Lacrosse this year. That’s right, they are the new kids on the block. And I hate to say it, but the new guys are putting the others to shame in the logo department.
When I first saw the Atlanta Blaze logo, the first thing that jumped out at me was the lacrosse ball that was on fire. It looks like someone swung that thing so hard, it was set ablaze! Perhaps it was Kevin Rice who fired that shot, seeing as how he scored the Blaze’s first goal in franchise history, just 44 seconds into their very first match! The “A” has been shaped to appear like a goal, and that flaming lacrosse ball is heading right for it. The overall look of this logo is great. The edges are on fire, the lettering is consistent and trendy, and the elongated shield is pleasing to the eye. Congratulations Atlanta Blaze, we think you have the BEST logo in Major League Lacrosse!

Since we’re discussing how lacrosse is one of the less popular sports in the United States, let’s take a look at one of our logos from a lesser known about town in America. We present the Intercourse Witnesses logo!

I know, we couldn’t believe it either. There is actually an unincorporated village in Pennsylvania named Intercourse. Intercourse is a popular place because of its name and because it’s in the heart of Amish country. The Amish sell crafts and take tourists on horse rides. Visitors also have a knack for stealing signs because of the Intercourse name.

This village was the setting for the 1985 movie Witness starring Harrison Ford. The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two. Thus, the Intercourse Witnesses were born. We love this funny t-shirt that pays tribute to the village that makes many snicker each time it’s said - Intercourse.

Our Favorite Major League Soccer Sports Logos

Major League Soccer hardly gets recognition in the United States. The majority of sports talk today revolves around the NFL, MLB, NBA and even the NHL from time to time. I’ll admit, even when we discuss awesome sports logos, rarely do I venture out to see what MLS has to offer. Well folks, today that all changes. I am diving into the Major League Soccer logos, and seeing what club has the best look out there. With 20 teams to take a look at, 17 from the U.S. and three from Canada, there is a solid pool of awesome logos to take a look at. Let’s take a look at a couple of the best MLS logos.

 Logos Courtesy of

The Chicago Fire have an awesome name. The Chicago Fire have an awesome logo. The Chicago Fire are awesome. Just look at that logo. What’s the first thing that pops into your mind? A fire department, right? Well, other MLS teams are going to need a fire department when the Chicago Fire get done with them! This club won the MLS title in their very first year of existence! That was in 1997, as they were one of the first expansion teams in Major League Soccer. But back to the logo. It’s very well done. With the look of a traditional fire department crest, the script “Chicago Fire” broken up on the top and bottom, and the “C” sitting front and center in an awesome font, their logo is outstanding!

Real (pronounced “re” like to do something over again, and “Al” like the name) Salt Lake has a classy look. RLS has a logo that would be consider more of a traditional soccer logo, as compared to some of the other Major League Soccer teams. The first part of their name, “Real” is Spanish for royal. And the club gave their logo a royal look. Of course every royal look needs a crown. And RLS has a nice gold crown atop their initials. The colors used in the logo, claret and cobalt, really add to the royal tone of the look. All of this taking place in a traditional shield, Real Salt Lake solidifies their esteemed look.

The New England Revolution have the BEST logo in Major League Soccer. Founded in 1996, the club selected their name based on the region’s vital role in the American Revolution, from 1775-1783. The Revs, as they are so nicknamed, took their name and heritage to the next level, with one awesome logo. As we have discussed repeatedly when analyzing logos, simplicity is key. The Revs logo is certainly simple. but at the same time powerful. They took a play on the American flag, and made it fit their club. We see a soccer ball where the blue field of stars once stood. Red stripes seem to wave, just as Old Glory does in the wind. As a whole, the logo looks aged and antiqued. Looking at it is inspiring and motivational. What a perfect logo to represent the team, that’s representing the beginning of our great country!

Just like MLS not getting enough time in the spotlight, our very own soccer logos don’t get enough love either. And that’s a shame, because these logos are totally awesome. So let’s recognize the best of our soccer looks right now! Take a look at our Arizona Pricks logo.

Cactus can be quite prickly, and no part of the United States features more cactus than the beautiful state of Arizona and its most prominent city, Phoenix. Phoenix also has a huge soccer (aka fútbol) following. We’ve teamed the two together to form the Arizona Pricks Awesome Sports Logo. Hard to believe that nature can be this funny, but there are actually cacti that look like man parts! This awesome tee is great to wear when you want to tell that certain person in your life what you really think of them... Instead of letting it out, just point to this awesome t-shirt! Where there are cacti, there are a lot of pricks. Wear this t-shirt with pride!

Our second awesome soccer t-shirt hails from Tequila Mexico. We couldn’t believe that Tequila didn’t have a team called the worms. Just like craft beer, Tequila is having it’s own growth spurt. You don’t see many worms in Tequila anymore and you certainly don’t see worm sports logos until now. So add a few soccer or futbol closet favorites to your collection. Better yet, these two would be an awesome start to our T-shirt of the Month Club collection. Save money, get free shipping and put a smile on your face each month when a new shirt arrives in the mail. Now that’s awesome!

Earnhardt's Absence Hurts Nascar

Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced last week that he would be missing the rest of the NASCAR season. He has missed the last six races, attempting to recover from concussion symptoms. Doctors believe that Earnhardt Jr. suffered a concussion in a crash at the Michigan International Speedway, back on June 12th. Reports state that he has been undergoing tests and evaluations related to this concussion, which has caused issues related to focusing on objects at a distance and balance.

With 12 races to go, the Hendrick Motorsports team will use Jeff Gordon and Alex Bowman to fill in. Missing the remaining NASCAR season won’t have any negative impact on Earnhardt Jr.’s standings, as he wasn’t slated to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup anyhow. The No. 88 driver is looking towards the 2017 season already, saying he that he “plan(s) to be healthy and ready to compete at Daytona in February.”

Earnhardt Jr. will be 42 years old next month. He has 26 wins in his 595 career starts. Never winning a Sprint Cup title, his best finish was third overall in 2003. He has seen a resurgence in his career as of late, making the last five Chase for the Sprint Cup runnings.

Fans are definitely behind Junior, as he’s proven to be a NASCAR fan favorite driver over the last 13 years. He’s been voted Sprint Cup Series Most Popular Driver every year since 2003. A lot of that may have to do with his father, NASCAR Hall of Fame Driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. Senior was another fan favorite, being one of the most popular drivers in the sport, until his untimely passing in a NASCAR race in 2001. Despite the fame that the “Earnhardt” name carries, Junior has earned fame in his own right.

He has appeared in several movies, including “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” among others. Junior hosted a television show on the Speed Channel, has been featured twice on MTV Cribs, and has leant his voice to numerous voice acting roles. Being so involved in the media has led him to gain additional fame and notoriety, above NASCAR.

We at Awesome Sports Logos certainly hope that Junior is able to recover from these concussion symptoms, and we look forward to seeing him back on the track in the 2017 season. A healthy Dale Jr. means a much healthier sport. We don’t like the feeling of not having an Earnhardt on the track.

As an aside, we truly want to thank you for reading all of our blogs and supporting us by buying our t-shirts. We actually have a funny racing t-shirt. Hailing from the beautiful Midwest and the birthplace of LeBron James, it’s the Akron Rubbers.

Akron is the fifth largest city in Ohio and is also known as the Rubber Capital of the world, or “Rubber City”. At one point in the early 1920’s, Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire each had their headquarters in Akron and that’s how they got their anointed nickname. Goodyear is still based in the city.

Ferdinand Schumacher, the inventor of oatmeal and breakfast cereal, hails from Akron but we felt as though the Akron Oatmeal wouldn’t be a best seller. We do however feel as though the Akron Rubbers and our speedy tire logo on a super soft t-shirt will be a favorite. We love the name and the history that surrounds our awesome Akron Rubbers sports logo. Grab it today or better yet, get it as part of our T-shirt of the Month Club and enjoy some serious savings. Now that’s awesome!
