The History Behind Our San Francisco Swallows Logo

This is one of our most talked about sports logos that we created and it truly has an amazing back story. So amazing that when I tell it, people accuse me of making it up. I wouldn’t do that! Okay, maybe I did make up a city and story for our Cocksville Blockers awesome t-shirt but just one made up city and logo out of 42 isn’t bad.

The Bay Area has some amazing heritage sports logos. From the Giants to the 49’ers to the Raiders and now the Golden State Warriors are building something special. This area is buzzing with passionate sports fans.

Now comes the San Francisco Swallows. I know what your first thought is and that’s what many find hilarious about the name but here is the true story behind the name and logo. Here is the quick explanation with some props involved.

Here is the more detailed explanation. The White Swallow was a Clipper ship built in the Boston area back in 1853.

The Swallows primary mission was to travel from the east coast to California to support their booming trade. Here’s how this vessel became famous. In 1866, several members of the Swallows crew were arrested for mutiny. There was much more to the story. The crew of the Clipper ship were treated so harshly that two deaths occurred on the journey. The crew of the White Swallow had enough and took over the ship. During the trial many guests on the Swallow and some of the officers confessed the real story supporting the crew and their mutiny efforts. The case against the crew was dismissed.

For many years following many cases involving harsh working conditions were known as “White Swallow” cases.

We thought this was a fascinating story in Clipper history. Here is one of the original posters of the White Swallow.

From this poster, we built our San Francisco Swallows sports logo. I love the combination of grey, blue with the slightest bit of yellow on the border to make it stand out. We offer this logo on a light baby blue and a light grey t-shirt.

The San Francisco Swallows, the perfect holiday gift for that t-shirt lover in your life. Better yet, combo our Swallows t-shirt with a few other of our closet favorites and get a better deal with our T-shirt of the Month Club.

Thanks as always for reading. Go Swallows!

Vegas Unveils The Golden Knights as Their NHL Name

We can now say that the NHL has officially arrived in Las Vegas. In a rally in front of their brand new arena, fans were treated to the official name and sports logo unveil of the first major sports franchise in Nevada.

The team did a really good job keeping the fans and media guessing what the official name would be. The three names that became final speculation were the Las Vegas Golden Knights, Las Vegas Desert Knights, and the Las Vegas Silver Knights. Everyone pretty much knew Knights would be in the name. Owner Bill Foley also mentioned that Sidewinders and Nighthawks were discussed.

So here is your winner, the Vegas Golden Knights.

 Logo images courtesy of nhl.com/goldenknights

Let’s start with the name. It’s not the Las Vegas Golden Knights, it’s the Vegas Golden Knights. As a person who lived in Las Vegas, I can relate to just Vegas. When you live in Las Vegas, you drop the Las. “I’m from Vegas”.  It’s a nice touch and a tribute to the thousands of residents who created the ground swell to make this franchise happen.

As for the logo, Foley attended West Point. Here is his quote from NHL.com, "The Knights are the epitome of the warrior class," the U.S. Military Academy graduate said. "They're team-oriented, they always stick together, they never give up, they never give in. And hockey players are warriors. They've always been team players, all for one. That's us. That's what we'll be." You may not notice it at first but while it looks like a Knights mask, the part where the eyes, nose and mouth would be is shaped like a "V" symbolizing the hometown.

The team explained the colors in the logo.

Steel Grey- strength and durability;

Gold-The state of Nevada is the largest gold producer in the United States

Black- Power and Intensity.

Here is the secondary logo of the team.

I actually like this logo better than the primary. You have some great Knight swords and together they create a star that resembles the star on the iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign. The team explained that the red in the logo stands for the desert skyline along with the famous Red Rock in the surrounding mountains.

Finally, here is the word mark for the team which you will see on various merchandise.

Unfortunately, the logo unveiling didn’t go as planned. As you can see in this video at about the 8:49 mark, the video started with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman but quickly went to a place holder which is basically a blank screen with the name.

Foley jumps on the microphone with the quote, “We’re going to do better on the rink, I’ll tell you that”. Good save Bill Foley. I can only imagine what was going through your mind. You’ve spent millions of dollars on this franchise and this is your day. North American hockey fans have their eyes on you and that happens. I feel as though the video production team won’t be sleeping too much tonight. Vegas is one of the worlds top entertainment destinations, how can you not get a video on the screen?

So here’s my take. I hate to knock this logo because as a former Vegas resident, I couldn’t be more excited for a community that I have grown to love. That said, there are so many unique features of Southern Nevada and that’s what the logo should have focused on. Reading various articles, it seems as though the team wanted to stay away from anything associated with gambling. To me, that’s what you are known for so embrace it.  If I say Golden Knights, does Vegas come to mind?

Full disclosure, I reached out to the team and offered up our Las Vegas Snake Eyes logo.

Some in the city think that our logo signifies losing because that’s not the best role in Craps. Snake Eyes to me rolls off the tongue and has a cool double meaning with snakes in the desert as well as the subtle gambling reference. Oh well, they didn’t get back to me. They have their vision and I’m excited for them. I just think this franchise would have exploded with the right creative name. I’ll be rooting for them on the ice! Go Knights!!

Our Favorite Sorority Recruitment Videos

This blog pains me to write. That said, having to go through all these Sorority videos to pick out a few of the best is exhausting. That’s exactly what all of you have to tell my wife.  She doesn’t believe this is grueling and painful. If you get in trouble for reading this, I’ll defend you. You are just reading a sports logos blog. You thought you were going to read about a new logo and these videos came out of nowhere.

Seriously, my point of this blog is how amazing these videos are. Forget about the ladies in the videos, how about the production level? We have some regular Spielberg’s on our hands. Here are some of our favorites. You will notice a common Alpha Phi theme with these videos. I’m not sure at one point of this video I squeeze in a request for some Alpha Phi production dollars.

USC Alpha Phi 2016

How did they get use of one of the most famous stadiums in America? They these lovely young ladies go on a hike with their own water bottle label. That’s a quality logo placement by the way. A picture of Dasani or Aquafina wouldn’t have the same effect. They also have their own hats and blankets.

We head to the desert and Arizona State featuring Alpha Phi once again.

How do we at Awesome Sports Logos get this budget? This is our dream vacation. You get dropped off in a hot air balloon and get to go skateboarding with closed down roads so you can film. Some off road action, fun in the water and a ride high above to see the views.

The most popular video comes from last year. The Alabama Alpha Phi video from 2015 has surpassed one million views.

I’m wondering if I can get the Alpha Phi hookup and rent the Crimson Tide stadium for a day. What about 10 minutes, will you give a guy a discount?

Kudos to the creativity of these sororities and the filmmakers they teamed up with. I’m just jealous and I’m sure many others are as well.

So here are two of our low budget videos from our past. Time to do some more. No stadiums, helicopters or hot air balloons but we did bribe a three time Super Bowl winner.

I really had to convince my wife to be in this video. Brilliant performance by her in this video. She didn’t even require a makeup trailer which I appreciate . As for me, just wearing my favorite El Paso Luchadores t-shirt was good enough for me.

In this second low budget feature we convinced former Linebacker Ted Johnson to join in the fun.

Ted is an amazing guy and we can’t thank him enough for agreeing to do this. I would think his Super Bowl performances are much more memorable but this has to be a close second right?

One area we refuse to be cheap on is the quality of our t-shirts. Selling t-shirts on the world wide web is awesome. There is a downside that you might not think of and that’s the quality. We promise that our t-shirts are high quality and super soft. Nobody wants to wear cardboard. We like to think of them as a high quality designer t-shirts at non designer prices. You shouldn’t have to pay $30-$35 dollars maybe even more.

In fact it gets even cheaper if you join our t-shirt of the month club which makes an awesome holiday gift. If you want someone to compliment you on your creativity, you are a few clicks away from getting them something special.

Thanks as always for reading. Congrats again ladies on some awesome videos!

Theo Epstein is the Curse Breaker

The Chicago Cubs, after 108 years have finally won the World Series. After over a century of waiting, this marquee franchise deserved it. Despite some controversial decisions, Joe Maddon managed the team well. The team was full of talented players, both on the mound and at the plate. After getting 103 wins during the regular season, the Cubs seemed destined to finally break their curse. But what exactly started such a curse, and what ultimately led to it being broken?

In 1945, during Game 4 of the World Series, a Cubs fan placed a curse on the team. William Sianis was asked to leave Wrigley Field, due to the odor of his pet goat. When he was exiting, Sianis stated, “Them Cubs, they ain’t gonna win no more.” The Cubs ended up losing that World Series, and didn’t return to one until this past season.

I think there is one man that can be given credit for breaking the Chicago Cubs curse. That one man is none other than Theo Epstein, the President of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs. Epstein was able to put all the necessary parts in place, to put history into motion. He was able to secure one of the best managers in the game of baseball, and after just five years with the Cubs, he had all of the right players assembled.

People like Theo Epstein don’t get enough credit. The hard work that front office personnel put into the team goes all but underappreciated. But not Theo Epstein. People in the baseball community have already pegged him as Hall of Fame bound. Some are even considering him one of the best baseball executives to have ever been involved in the game of baseball. And that’s not just because of what he was able to do for the Chicago Cubs.

In 1919, the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. Up to that point, the Red Sox had been one of the most popular and successful teams in all of baseball. Once Babe Ruth was traded to the rival Yankees, Boston began an 84-year World Series winless drought. Meanwhile, the Bronx Bombers became a dominate franchise, with 27 World Series Championships. The “Curse of the Bambino” was broken in 2004, just two years after none other than Theo Epstein became the general manager.

Theo Epstein has broken two MAJOR curses, that impacted two of the most well-known baseball franchises. He ended sadness and heartbreak for two huge baseball cities. Through sheer determination, raw ability, and pure baseball genius, Epstein has become one of the best baseball executives to ever be associated with the game. He is certainly guaranteed a spot in the baseball Hall of Fame.

As good as Theo Epstein is, Awesome Sports Logos has one curse that not even he could break. And that’s the New Orleans Curse!

Known as "The Big Easy", New Orleans is not only known for Mardi Gras, but also for its voodoo experience and voodoo shops. From this, we bring you the New Orleans Curse. We love this basketball logo of a voodoo doll going up for a slam, pins still intact. No witchcraft or spells with this funny New Orleans t-shirt, just a lot of compliments when you walk around with it on.

We can’t believe that the Holidays are approaching rapidly. Thank you for all of your support. If you are looking for a creative holiday gift, think of our T-shirt of the Month Club. The Florida Panthers New Sports Logo is Awesome

There are four sports that make up “The Big 4” in the United States. In no particular order, they are football, baseball, basketball and hockey. The NHL isn’t as widely covered on television and other media outlets, as compared to the other three. Last week, while hanging out at my local sports bar with some buddies, there was a hockey game on TV. Something about this game caught my attention. It was a glimpse of something I haven’t seen before, and it got my sports logo loving brain working! I noticed that the Florida Panthers had changed their logo. And man, it was beautiful! First, let’s talk a little bit about this Florida hockey team.

The Florida Panthers were founded in 1993, as an expansion team. After just three years in the league, they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Panthers ended up losing in four games, to the Colorado Avalanche. The immediate success was well received by Florida residents. With two hockey teams in the state, the Panthers helped shape Florida into the hockey-loving state that it is now.

In recent years, the Panthers have failed to find much success. They did make it to the playoffs last season, though they lost in the first round to the New York Islanders. The three seasons prior to that, the Panthers finished 5th, 7th and 6th, respectively. Looking to mix things up, the team started working on a new look. Prior to this season, the Florida Panthers unveiled their new logo. And it is AWESOME! Let’s look at the two images, and do what we at Awesome Sports Logos do best: compare!

Logos Courtesy of SportsLogos.net

The Panthers’ original logo is, without a doubt, ferocious. The image shows the big cat in a leaping motion, claws forward and mouth ready to consume the opposition. The coloring is simple, clean and consistent. There isn’t really anything that would immediately draw negativity to this logo, but when you get into the finer details, it’s missing a lot. There is no lettering to state the team’s name or home city/state. While the logo itself looks good, one can also tell that it’s dated. It was a fine image for the 90s, but we’re in the 21st Century now. They were due for an upgrade. And what better time to upgrade than when your team just had three back-to-back terrible seasons? Let’s see what the Florida Panthers came up with.

This new logo is one of my personal favorites in all of the National Hockey League. This new image is a clear upgrade, and one for the better. The Panthers went with an increasingly more popular shield look. It’s a traditional shield, in shape and features. It gives off the overall appearance of one of the well-respected soccer logos from overseas. It looks classy, modern and sleek. More importantly, it encompasses what the old logo was missing: lettering. You see “FLORIDA” clearly and plainly across the top of the shield, arching across the red background. I like the way the Panther itself is presented. This big cat still has the look of intensity in its eyes, but in a more honorable and sophisticated manner. The Panther is featured turned to its profile, looking ahead at what’s to come. The symbolism in that is intense, as the team moves on from its previous logo. They are ready to look ahead, and seek out success. Overall, I think the Florida Panthers did one heck of a job in creating their new look.

On the opposite coast, there’s another hockey team with one heck of a logo.

Oregon is one of the greenest states we have. Portland is one of the more eclectic cities in America, with a huge emphasis on the environment. Thus, the meanest hockey team in the northwest is born, the Portland Tree Huggers. I wouldn’t want to skate against this tree and if I did, I hope that it has more bark than bite. We think this Portland sports logo t-shirt will draw some attention when you wear this super soft, cool t-shirt around town. Get it today solo or add it to your list when you join our T-shirt of the Month Club

We’d love to hear what some of your favorite sports logos are. Comment below, and tell us what team you think has an awesome look!

Can a Sports Logo Makeover Fix The Cleveland Browns

The city of Cleveland has found some amazing success with their sports teams, as of late. In the NBA, the Cavaliers celebrated winning the Finals last season. This year, fans got to witness the team raise their championship banner, and the city was proud. In the MLB, the Indians made it to the World Series. Although they ended up losing in Game 7, the city of Cleveland was proud yet again. Their beloved baseball team made it to the show. They achieved success, despite not being considered as good as some of the other teams. While the city of Cleveland has had much to celebrate, there is just one black spot on their record. That black spot is the Cleveland Browns.

The NFL is the most popular sporting organization in the United States. They constantly put other sports to shame in advertising dollars, television deals, and ratings. The city of Cleveland just can’t seem to catch a break in football, as the Browns are one of the consistently worst teams in the league. So far this year, the team is winless. That’s no typo, the Browns have lost every game this season, and are currently sitting at 0-10.

What could possibly be the cause of this unlucky season? Is it bad coaching? Could it be that Johnny Manziel left a curse on the team? Is there simply no luck left, after the NBA and MLB teams drained it all up? There are many avenues that one could explore, in trying to place or find blame. Even I have my own theories. Frankly, I think that the team’s logo is the cause of their downtrodden season.

Logo courtesy of sportslogos.net

When you look at other teams’ logos, they all have something worth looking at. The Browns on the other hand, their logo has nothing to it. Their helmet is plain orange, with a single white stripe going down the middle, from front to back. The single white stripe is outlined on both sides by a black accent color. There is no animal, there is no lettering, there is nothing but simplicity. What do fans have to cheer for? What do players have to draw inspiration from? Nothing.

There is no eagle to take strength and perseverance from. There is no panther to take speed and agility from. There isn’t even a patriot, to draw unity and fight from. There is only the color orange. And while many fans, sports writers and even coaches may say that this means nothing, I would disagree. I feel that if there were something there, anything at all, the team could draw something from it. They could draw at least enough for a win, and maybe enough for more than the three wins the team achieved last season.

Can a sports logo make that much of a difference? The answer is probably not? That said, it does signify change and a new beginning. When the Patriots, Bengals and Bills changed their logo, success quickly followed. It's probably coincidence but it does bring needed attention. A change also brings new merchandise sales which no owner would frown upon.

While no one can say for certain what has caused this team to underperform, I would say that it’s time to make some changes. A logo change may sound simple, or even irrelevant. But now is the moment when no stone must go unturned. This is the moment to not hold back, and do whatever it takes to change their history of less-than-mediocre play. What will the Browns do to restore hope to the city of Cleveland? What will they do to stop being the black spot on an otherwise perfect Cleveland sports era?

Cleveland actually has a pretty cool alternate sports logo. Why not put this on the helmet and change it up?

Logo courtesy of sportslogos.net

One logo that doesn’t need any changing is our very own Cocksville Blockers! Okay, we admit that this is the only made up city, but how could we resist? This city name and logo go hand in hand. We were going to use Cockeysville, Maryland but that is pronounced much differently.

This angry rooster will stop at nothing to get in your way and block any of your moves. Of course, we’re talking about football moves, what were you thinking of? This Cocksville Blockers funny t-shirt is our best seller and for good reason. Add it to your list on our t-shirt of the month club, and wait for this awesome tee to find its way to your doorstep at the first of every month!

Thanks for reading and supporting us!

YOU are AWESOME!
