My Favorite Dog Sports Logos

Dogs are awesome! We all know that and they certainly aren’t just “Man’s Best Friend”. I witness that every night at bedtime. The order of space in our bed is wife, dog and whatever sliver is left to squeeze into, I take. I’m sure I’m not the only one that faces this situation. That being said, we can’t say enough about our joyful animal friends and we also can’t say enough about Dog Sports Logos. Here are a few of our favorites.

The El Paso Chihuahuas

 Logo photos courtesy of SportsLogos.net

Back in 2014, the Padres moved their AAA team from Tucson to El Paso. With that came a new stadium and a new sports logo and boy did it take off. El Paso loves their Chihuahuas. Their gear is at the airport, at shopping malls and it has quickly become the best selling minor league baseball logo. Go Chihuahuas!

 The Jackson Generals

The Generals are based in Jackson Tennessee and are the AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners in the Southern League. Now that’s a long call up trip from Jackson to Seattle. Terrific artistry by the designer on this sports logo. If you pictured a dog General, it would look like “Sarge” who is the Generals mascot. I also love the replacement of chewing on a bat instead of a bone. Go Generals!

The Batavia Muckdogs

Baseball has been in Batavia New York since 1961. The Muckdogs are the Single A affiliate of the Florida Marlins in the New York Penn League. So what the heck is a Muckdog? Muck is a form of soil found in this part of New York. The name Muckdog came from a fan contest back in 1998. I like this logo for several reasons. Muck regionalizes the logo’s heritage. Crafty work by this sports logo designer making the broken fence into an “M” with a tough looking pooch breaking through.

The Midland RockHounds

Midland is the AA affiliate of the Oakland A’s in the Texas League. In a 2014 interview with the awesome website sportslogos.net, Rockhounds PR man Brian Smith at the time said that the name is a nickname for a Geologist. Midland Texas is serious oil country, thus the hardhat on the dog and if you look real close, you can see some Oil Derrick’s in the background.

The Beverly Hills Fighting Chiweenies

We are biased on this one because it’s one of our logos. This was actually a school project for one of our logo designers. She was given the task of creating a ferocious sports logo out of a docile creature and she nailed it with this cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund. We needed to find a location and Beverly Hills just seemed like the place you would find a Chiweenie peeking outside of a purse. Dog lovers will certainly strike up some conversations by wearing this awesome t-shirt. Even better, get your Chiweenies t-shirt at a discount price by subscribing to our T-shirt of the Month Club. Free shipping and discount prices. It also makes your trip to the mailbox easier because it’s something other than a bill. Now that’s awesome.

Have a great day and be sure to support your local animal shelters to help out dogs and other animals in need.

You are awesome!

The Kid Gets Inducted Into the Hall

In what was just his first year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame, Ken Griffey Jr. received 99.3% of the votes. Of 440 total ballots, he was on 437 of them. That is an amazing feat, by far. Griffey was also the first ever first-overall draft pick to make it into the Hall. He now holds the record for the highest percent of Hall of Fame votes. The record was previously held by Tom Seaver, who received 98.8% of votes, back in 1992. It’s truly an honor to be on so many ballots. It speaks to the career you had, and the person you were/are.

There was speculation that Griffey could be the first unanimous inductee in Major League Baseball history. He most certainly had the statistics and personality to achieve this goal. He was an icon of his era, and one of the greatest players of all-time to watch at the plate. Griffey had a marvelous swing. It was beautiful. It was poetic. What he did during his tenure, despite facing injuries, was marvelous. He was an inspiration to fellow players, and an entire generation of kids growing up.

During his official induction ceremony on Sunday, Griffey had a hard time containing all of the emotion. With his children in the audience, and speaking of his father during his speech, the tears began to flow. The memory that Griffey left in the minds and hearts of baseball fans everywhere will be forever cherished. His on the field statistics and off the field attitude have sealed him as a Major League Baseball Legend. With his plaque on the wall in Cooperstown, Ken Griffey Jr. will forever be enshrined in Major League history.

As a baseball legend, we at Awesome Sports Logos find it only fitting that Ken Griffey Jr. should sport the legendary Middleton Fingers tee. This awesome logo is a legend of its own at awesomesportslogos.com!

This was our contest winning entry sent in by Lee B in California. This is an awesome name Lee! We proudly present the Middleton, Mississippi Fingers. There are many Middleton’s in the United States. We could give you a fancy explanation and try to spin it, but let’s just say if we did an alternate logo of the Fingers, it would be for the birds.

Middleton is actually an extinct town and has been for a while. We think this logo is so creative yet so simple. Huge props to our designer Matt on this one! This is one funny Middleton, MS sports logo t-shirt that will have people laughing when they see it!

Add this super soft tee to your t-shirt of the month rotation!

The Tennessee Smokies Have an A+ Sports Logo

In carousing my daily baseball websites, checking the latest in news and scores, I came across a minor league baseball team that got my attention. After doing a bit of research on this Double-A club, I think I may have found a new MiLB favorite! The Tennessee Smokies, of the Southern League, are the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Their name (referencing the well-known Smoky Mountains) and their logo (possibly referencing the even more well-known Smokey Bear) make a great combination! Speaking of their logo, let’s take see this bad boy!

Right off the bat, I see a bear with a bat. And it’s pretty awesome. The Smokies hit all the basics in this logo. A clearly defined mascot, the team name scripted across the image, and fantastic coloring. There’s even a hint of mountains and a forest in the background, on either side of the bear’s head. I think what’s even more interesting about this logo, is that there are some similarities with that of their Major League Baseball counterpart, the Chicago Cubs.

Let’s start with the obvious. There are bears in both logos. What I find most interesting, and possibly ironic, about this is that the Minor League team has the grown up bear, while the Major League team has the little baby bear. It’s almost as if they should be switched, based on their position in the baseball rankings. Now, here’s my favorite part of the Tennessee Smokies logo. Do you see the red coloring in the background? It peaks through at the very top and very bottom of the image. Ok, now bear with me here (pun completely intended).

What if the Tennessee Smokies removed their bear, removed their forest and mountains, and removed their name? What’s left? Well, seeing the shape of that red coloring, I think we’d find a big, red “C” underneath! A big, red “C” as in the Chicago Cubs logo! When I first laid eyes on the Smokies logo, that was the first thing that jumped out at me. I thought it was fascinating that this “C” can be seen, whether it was designed intentionally or unintentionally. An A+ goes to the Tennessee Smokies, for an awesome logo design!

Here is the old logo that the Smokies had from 2000-2014. They went from a regular sports logo to an awesome sports logo.

Another A+ goes out to the Nashville Bootleggers, just like the Smokies, a Tennessee logo that was done right.

It is said that the term “Bootlegging” began during the Civil War. Soldiers would sneak liquor into their camps by hiding pint bottles in the boots underneath their trousers. Parts of Tennessee became famous for Bootlegging. In fact, Johnson City Tennessee was known as a hideout and a stopover point for Al Capone. Prohibition was lifted in 1933 and Tennessee Whiskey has been flourishing ever since. This Nashville sports logo is carrying a Tennessee Whiskey barrel instead of a football. We hope you enjoy our Nashville Bootleggers t-shirt, in fact, you can get the Bootleggers for a cheaper price by joining our T-shirt of the Month Club. Discount prices with free shipping plus a smile each month when you head to your mailbox.

Spotlight Shines Bright on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Coastal Carolina is having an amazing sports year. Nope, it’s not a misprint. I didn’t say North Carolina, or South Carolina, its Coastal Carolina.

The Chanticleer’s captured their first Division One NCAA title in any sport by winning the 3rd and deciding game over Arizona in the College World Series 4-3. While it wasn’t officially their title, alumnus Dustin Johnson also just won the 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Many of you are about to Google Coastal Carolina to find out where it is followed by, “What the heck is a Chanticleer?” You’ve come to the right place. If there is a logo out there, we’ll give you the full story.

Logo Courtesy of sportslogos.net

Coastal Carolina University is located in Conway South Carolina. Conway is only about eight miles away from Myrtle Beach. The University has an enrollment just over ten thousand.
Now on to their mascot the Chanticleer which is certainly a unique sports logo name. Here is the explanation of the logo from GoCCUSports.com.

Chanticleer comes from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. More specifically, he comes from the Nun's Priest Tale, a story within Canterbury Tales. The Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard. For the best description of Chanticleer, we turn to Chaucer's words. "For crowing there was not his equal in all the land. His voice was merrier than the merry organ that plays in church, and his crowing from his resting place was more trustworthy than a clock. His comb was redder than fine coral and turreted like a castle wall, his bill was black and shone like a jet, and his legs and toes were like azure. His nails were whiter than the lily and his feathers were like burnished gold." With all of his splendor and great looks, Chanticleer is also greatly feared and mightily respected by all.

Now that’s an awesome back story. GoCCUsports.com goes on to tell us that the name was developed in the 1960’s by an English professor and his students. Coastal Carolina was affiliated with the University of South Carolina at the time so they wanted something similar to the famous Gamecock. They kept it in the family and that’s the backstory of the sports logo that is in all kinds of headlines for all of the right reasons!

I love this logo. I think they did a great job making it look like a mean fighting rooster as well as using a lot of teal and blue in the logo. To me that’s a perfect fit with a school that offers majors in Marine Science.

Before Dustin Johnson and the College World Series, the school ‘s athletic program was probably best known for former head football coach David Bennett’s interesting description of wanting his kids to act more like dogs.

This video had a nice viral run with now almost two million views.

Congrats Coastal Carolina and Chanticleer Fans!!  You are National Champions and we couldn’t be more stoked for you.

At Awesome Sports Logos, we have our own fighting rooster and it happens to be our best-selling t-shirt as well. Cocksville is actually our only made up city but the Cocksville Blockers is such a great name, we couldn’t resist. As you can see here, three time Super Bowl Champion Ted Johnson digs it. Are you going to argue with him? No way.

This fighting rooster will try everything to get in your way. Maybe picking up one of our super soft Cocksville Blockers t-shirts will be a subtle message to your friends to politely step aside.  If you really want a discount on this t-shirt and more, just click on our T-shirt of the Month tab.  Free shipping plus discounts on all of our shirts. A Possible Snoop Dog vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Logo Battle

Calvin Broadus, better known as Snoop Dogg, filed a trademark application last November. The trademark was for a logo he plans to use in his Leafs by Snoop line. Given Snoop Dogg’s reputation, and the name of this very interesting product line, I’m sure you can guess what he’s selling and what this new logo might look like. Well, after seeing his logo, the Toronto Maple Leafs have some concerns.

According to a news story from www.sportingnews.com, the National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs have filed a formal opposition, hoping to give themselves more time to analyze the two logos. Found in the sportingnews.com article, “Christopher Sprigman, an intellectual properties professor at the New York University School of Law, told TSN that MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment) could argue the logos will cause confusion in the marketplace”.

Could these two logos seriously look so similar, that legal proceedings need to take place? Well, we at Awesome Sports Logos fancy ourselves as sports logo experts… or maybe enthusiasts at the least. Let’s take a look at the two logos side by side, and see just how similar they are. Or aren’t.

These two logos aren’t completely dissimilar, but they aren’t exactly carbon copies. Let’s go with the obvious. The coloring is different, Snoop Dogg went with gold and the Maple Leafs, of course, have their traditional navy blue. Toronto’s logo is more of a traditional Canadian Maple Leaf design, with three distinct points. Snoop Dogg’s logo looks more modern, almost digital, with five separate points. The fonts are completely different, and there isn’t anything proprietary about script being placed on top of the logo.

All in all, I think the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have anything to worry about. Personally, I don’t think any “confusion in the marketplace” will happen. Fans of the Maple Leafs won’t be buying any Leafs by Snoop gear, mistaking it for their beloved hockey team. And I definitely don’t think that any Leafs by Snoop consumers are going to be snatching up Maple Leafs gear thinking they were getting the latest and greatest from the esteemed rapper.
I say Toronto should let it go, and focus more of their time and energy on actual hockey. They were at the very bottom of the Atlantic Division this past season. They might need a little more concentration. One hockey team that definitely doesn’t need any more practice, is the Brooklyn Leg Breakers.

Are you talkin’ to me? The Brooklyn Leg Breakers play hockey, hard core style. If they could break through the ice and make you swim with the fishes, they would. This logo was inspired by the many New York mafia stories of old. We love the detail of this logo including the pinstripes on the suit, the Brooklyn Bridge and skyline as the backdrop, as well as the NY lettering inside the tape of the stick. Forget about it, and pick up this awesome Brooklyn sports logo t-shirt today!

North Dakota Has a New Sports Logo

Four years ago, the NCAA threatened sanctions against the University of North Dakota, urging them to replace their controversial Fighting Sioux logo. For the past four years, the school has been playing games under a standard “ND” or “North Dakota” verbiage. This past Wednesday, the school announced an official new name and logo. Alumni, students and others voted for a new name, this past November. The vote was somewhat close, with Fighting Hawks beating out Roughriders. A new logo accompanied the name change, and this past Wednesday, it all became official. Here is the video they unveiled called "New Name, Same North Dakota".

The Fighting Sioux have been retired, and the Fighting Hawks are the future of UND.

After the school dropped a reported $50,000 for the logo design, it will surely stick around for a long while. While the logo and name have gotten mixed reviews on social media, there is nothing the school can do at this point. Alumni, students, faculty and any others involved with the university are going to have to live with the new changes. Personally, I don’t think it’s that bad…

Here is the Fighting Sioux logo, that the NCAA deemed in violation of their rule against “controversial” images and names.

 Logos courtesy of sportslogos.net

The next logo is what UND has been using for the past four years, to fill the gap until a new look could be created.

The new Fighting Hawks image is actually not as bad as many people on the various social media outlets make it out to be. It’s sleek, incorporates the “ND” initials, and the hawk is at least moderately terrifying. This new logo is certainly nowhere near as bad as some of the others we have analyzed. That being said, I don’t think it’s better than their “transitional” N.D logo. Just a plain “ND” that interlocks is pretty awesome. It’s simple. And if I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a thousand times, simple is BETTER in a sports logo. I think UND should have kept their intertwined ND logo, and saved themselves $50,000.

With no other option from the NCAA, I’m sure the school went in the best direction they could. Not everyone is going to like it, but hey, I’m happy they have a new identity. Hopefully the new Fighting Hawks will have a fighting chance, and can wrestle the UND fans back into their corner.

Speaking of fighting and wrestling, we have a super awesome sports logo that you’re definitely going to love. The El Paso Luchadores are here to rock your closet! Here's our video to celebrate the Luchadores awesome t-shirt.

This basketball club logo takes on the name of the rich Luchador tradition that dates back to the early part of the 20th century. The popularity of the Luchadores has spilled over not just to wrestling but also to cartoons and movies. Many Luchador wrestlers are heroes in their culture and you will look like a hero by sporting this soft, funny and cool El Paso t-shirt with vibrant colors. Be sure to add this super soft tee to your monthly rotation, in our t-shirt of the month package!
