Earnhardt's Absence Hurts Nascar

Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced last week that he would be missing the rest of the NASCAR season. He has missed the last six races, attempting to recover from concussion symptoms. Doctors believe that Earnhardt Jr. suffered a concussion in a crash at the Michigan International Speedway, back on June 12th. Reports state that he has been undergoing tests and evaluations related to this concussion, which has caused issues related to focusing on objects at a distance and balance.

With 12 races to go, the Hendrick Motorsports team will use Jeff Gordon and Alex Bowman to fill in. Missing the remaining NASCAR season won’t have any negative impact on Earnhardt Jr.’s standings, as he wasn’t slated to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup anyhow. The No. 88 driver is looking towards the 2017 season already, saying he that he “plan(s) to be healthy and ready to compete at Daytona in February.”

Earnhardt Jr. will be 42 years old next month. He has 26 wins in his 595 career starts. Never winning a Sprint Cup title, his best finish was third overall in 2003. He has seen a resurgence in his career as of late, making the last five Chase for the Sprint Cup runnings.

Fans are definitely behind Junior, as he’s proven to be a NASCAR fan favorite driver over the last 13 years. He’s been voted Sprint Cup Series Most Popular Driver every year since 2003. A lot of that may have to do with his father, NASCAR Hall of Fame Driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. Senior was another fan favorite, being one of the most popular drivers in the sport, until his untimely passing in a NASCAR race in 2001. Despite the fame that the “Earnhardt” name carries, Junior has earned fame in his own right.

He has appeared in several movies, including “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” among others. Junior hosted a television show on the Speed Channel, has been featured twice on MTV Cribs, and has leant his voice to numerous voice acting roles. Being so involved in the media has led him to gain additional fame and notoriety, above NASCAR.

We at Awesome Sports Logos certainly hope that Junior is able to recover from these concussion symptoms, and we look forward to seeing him back on the track in the 2017 season. A healthy Dale Jr. means a much healthier sport. We don’t like the feeling of not having an Earnhardt on the track.

As an aside, we truly want to thank you for reading all of our blogs and supporting us by buying our t-shirts. We actually have a funny racing t-shirt. Hailing from the beautiful Midwest and the birthplace of LeBron James, it’s the Akron Rubbers.

Akron is the fifth largest city in Ohio and is also known as the Rubber Capital of the world, or “Rubber City”. At one point in the early 1920’s, Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire each had their headquarters in Akron and that’s how they got their anointed nickname. Goodyear is still based in the city.

Ferdinand Schumacher, the inventor of oatmeal and breakfast cereal, hails from Akron but we felt as though the Akron Oatmeal wouldn’t be a best seller. We do however feel as though the Akron Rubbers and our speedy tire logo on a super soft t-shirt will be a favorite. We love the name and the history that surrounds our awesome Akron Rubbers sports logo. Grab it today or better yet, get it as part of our T-shirt of the Month Club and enjoy some serious savings. Now that’s awesome!

September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day

Ahoy, Matey! September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. It’s a holiday to celebrate for no reason. Just kick back, keep an eye on your social media accounts, and watch people take advantage of this crazy day. Don’t hesitate to get into the action yourself! Find clever ways to plug in some pirate lingo into your everyday conversations. Arrr! Aye! Matey! Avast! Ahoy! Jolly Roger! Pillage! Plunder! These are all phrases that you can use to get involved in International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Here at Awesome Sports Logos, we will celebrate by presenting you some of the best pirate logos in sports!

But first, a joke you can use on this awesome day. “Did you hear about the newest Pirate movie? Just don’t bring the kids because it’s rated RRRRRRRRRRR!”   Guaranteed to get a chuckle, just like our shirts. Okay, Okay, on to the sports logos which is why you are reading this.

The Oakland Raiders have one of the fiercest pirate related logos in the NFL! This three-time Super Bowl winning team has pretty much carried the same look since their inception in 1960. Their look features a true scallywag, wearing an eye patch and a leather helmet from an earlier era in football. He sits in the center of a black shield, with crossed swords behind him. When you see the Oakland Raiders logo, you know this guy means business, and so do the fans. The Raider Nation is known for showing up to games early, dressed in awesome costumes, masks and face paint! Some of them can look even scarier than the meanest pirate you have ever seen.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers give the Oakland Raiders a run for their money in the pirate logo department. Their look is even more hardcore. The Bucs get right to the point, featuring a skull on a red flag. Again, we see crossed swords in this look, just under the skull, with a football at their intersection. The Tampa Bay version of the Jolly Roger flag is torn at the end, signifying their constant battles on the field. Their only Super Bowl win was in 2002, against the very same Oakland Raiders we mentioned above. Dubbed the “Pirate Bowl” by media and fans, this game was a clash of the scoundrels of the sea! And shiver me timbers! The Bucs managed to pull off a victory against the Raiders, forcing them to walk the plank!

Of course, when we talk about awesome logos, it never fails that Minor League Baseball teams end up in the mix.

The Bradenton Marauders have one of our favorite pirate logos! They are the Advanced-A minor league affiliate to none other than the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marauders training to be Pirates! Yo-ho-ho! What a sight. The Marauders logo is nothing to scoff at. It features exactly what you would imagine a pirate to look like. With an eye patch, thick scraggly beard and three-point captain’s hat, this pirate shows that he’s ready to pillage and plunder the opponents, all the way to a win!

At Awesome Sports Logos we haven’t made a Pirate logo yet but you never know what can happen. We do have a logo that looks similar to a Pirate but this logo didn’t steal. This logo played a big part in our American history! We present to you, the New York Zouaves!

The name Zouave actually comes from Algeria and was first used by the French army as they recruited military from the Zouaoua tribe. Zouaves are distinguished by their uniforms which included short open-fronted jackets, baggy trousers and often sashes and oriental headgear.

The New York Zouaves also known as the 11th New York Infantry took on the Zouaves name, uniforms and drill style during the Civil War. These volunteers actually started fighting immediately occupying Alexandria, Virginia just 24 hours after the state succeeded from the Union.

We hope you like this historic t-shirt as much as we do! Be sure to show off your International Talk Like A Pirate Day support, by picking up this super soft tee today! Even better, make it one of your choices by joining our T-shirt of the Month Club.

Sports Logos to Celebrate National Chicken Month

Happy National Chicken Month! That’s right, you read that correctly. September is National Chicken Month! This is when chicken producers and grocery stores will rally together and offer promotions on chicken, recognize brands that are great partners with chicken, and offer some outstanding recipes for… you guessed it, chicken! To aid in the celebration of National Chicken Month, we at Awesome Sports Logos are going to take a look at a couple of sports teams whose logos feature a chicken. These two teams should be considered the best liaisons between athletics and the chicken industry. With such a strong, deep connection to chicken, what better time to recognize these two teams than National Chicken Month! Let’s see what they have to offer!

The University of South Carolina Gamecocks has one mean kind of chicken in their logo.

 Logos Courtesy of SportsLogos.net

Getting their name from Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter, who was said to have “fought like a gamecock” in battle, this college team is rocking both an awesome name and an awesome logo. A large black “C” immediately catches the eye, but what’s in the middle of that letter is the main attraction. This is no ordinary chicken. It’s one tough Gamecock. With feathers ruffled and flared about, it appears lunging forward with fierce claws and a beak that means business. Like their namesake, South Carolina looks to be ready to fight hard on the football battlefield. While we absolutely do not condone chicken fighting, we do condone good, hard play on the football field! Our next team knows a thing or two about having a good, hard fight in football.

The University of Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens may not have the meanest, or most sophisticated chicken logo in the world of sports, but they definitely have some history and comedy behind their look.

In honor of the state bird of Delaware, UD gets both their logo and team name. The Blue Hen became the state bird of Delaware in 1939, and is one of only three state birds not native to the United States. The Fightin’ Blue Hens take pride in their state, and have refigured the Blue Hen into a look worthy of a sports team. This blue chicken may look like something out of a Saturday morning cartoon, but it can most certainly hold its own. With mascot YoUDee making the mascot hall of fame in 2006, and winning the Mascot National Championship in 2009, this team has built a legacy on the chicken! They also know how to produce QB’s. Two of note are 2002 NFL MVP Rich Gannon and Super Bowl Champion Joe Flacco. Go Blue Hens!

While these two logos do well in honoring National Chicken Month, they aren’t the best of the best. Of course, the most awesome chicken logo of all comes from right here at Awesome Sports Logos! The Cocksville Blockers deserve to be the face for National Chicken Month!

Okay, we admit that this is a made up city, but how could we resist? This city name and logo go hand in hand. We were going to use Cockeysville, Maryland but that is pronounced much differently. This angry rooster will stop at nothing to get in your way and block any of your moves. Of course we’re talking about football moves, what were you thinking of? This Cocksville Blockers funny t-shirt is our best seller and for good reason. Be sure to add this super soft tee to your t-shirt of the month club rotation!

Major QB Injuries Haunt Two NFL Teams

The NFL season hasn’t even officially started yet, and some teams have been left to scramble around and figure out how they plan to truly compete. Two notable teams have suffered injuries to their starting quarterbacks, leaving the fate of their season unknown. These tragic injuries have left the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys looking to fill quarterback roster spots, with practically no time left until week one of the regular season.

This past Tuesday, during a noncontact practice, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a terrible knee injury. Bridgewater suffered a complete ACL tear, dislocated knee and other structural damage to his left knee. Sources have reported that Bridgewater was in the process of dropping back for a pass, planted his leg down and then immediately fell to the ground. An ambulance was called, and Bridgewater was taken to a local area hospital.

The Vikings are now on the prowl for a quarterback that could potentially give them some kind of winning record this year. Shaun Hill, the team’s current backup, is a 36-year-old undrafted free agent. Though Hill did spend several years as a third string player, he has had his time in the spotlight. Hill had impressive games with the 49ers, and was a stud in NFL Europe in 2003. However, at his age and at his current level of play, Minnesota will be looking to find someone that can better handle the starting role. But they aren’t the only team in need of someone who can run their offense.

The Dallas Cowboys have had more than one quarterback injury issue this preseason. Backup quarterback Kellen Moore fractured his right ankle during a training camp exercise, back in the first week of August. At that point in time, losing Moore was not truly devastating to the Cowboys. The team had just drafted Dak Prescott, and paraded him out in preseason games to see what he was made of. After showing some success, the team was comfortable putting the role of backup quarterback in the hands of Prescott. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the Dallas Cowboys again.

Starting quarterback Tony Romo was injured in last week’s preseason game, against the Seattle Seahawks. Romo was tackled, fell to the ground and immediately grabbed his back. Dallas Cowboy fans everywhere had the same exact thought at the same exact time: “Oh no, not again.” The team’s worst fears came true, and Tony Romo suffered yet another injury. He suffered a broken bone in his back and will miss several weeks. Now, the Cowboys are down two quarterbacks and also on the hunt to add to their roster, with the regular season just around the corner.

I hope both of these teams find what they need to fill their rosters. And I certainly wish their injured quarterbacks a successful and speedy recovery.

If you’re a fan of football, we have one Awesome football logo tee that you need in your wardrobe!

The Nashville Bootleggers have the best look out of our football t-shirt options. It is said that the term “Bootlegging” began during the Civil War. Soldiers would sneak liquor into their camps by hiding pint bottles in the boots underneath their trousers.

Parts of Tennessee became famous for Bootlegging. In fact, Johnson City Tennessee was known as a hideout and a stopover point for Al Capone. Prohibition was lifted in 1933 and Tennessee Whiskey has been flourishing ever since. This Nashville sports logo is carrying a Tennessee Whiskey barrel instead of a football. We hope you enjoy our Nashville Bootleggers t-shirt!

Our Top American Hockey League Logos

We’ve discussed the awesome NBA D-League logos, and the even more awesome Minor League Baseball logos. Now, let’s see if the National Hockey League’s minor league system can get any skin in the game. We’ll be looking at some of the best American Hockey League logos, and trying to find the ones that are just as great as what we’ve featured before, in the MiLB and D-League.

We head to the Midwest for our first logo. You don't see many skeleton logos and that's what makes the Milwaukee Admirals awesome. The Admirals have long called Milwaukee home and this year, they'll have a new home arena moving from the Bradley Center to the University of Wisconsin Panther arena.

Photos of Logos courtesy of sportslogos.net

The Admirals also have one of the best alternate logos in sports with bone lettering carving out an M and an A. The hockey stick finishing off the A is a great touch.

Down to the Lone Star state for our next AHL logo.

The San Antonio Rampage have one mean looking logo! It strikes fear into the minds of their opponents. In all black and white, one would think that the Rampage took the easy way out. But I think the opposite. When you have this big bad bull staring you down, you don’t need color to make it any better. With smoke coming from his nostrils, and a cloud of dust in trail, the San Antonio Rampage clearly mean business. This Colorado Avalanche affiliate is prepared to stomp all over the other AHL team logos! But, will the Rampage be able to take down our next awesome Logo? Maybe, if they can find it…

Do you see it? The monster? Exactly. You have no clue what’s coming! The Lake Erie Monsters, now known as the Cleveland Monsters as of this week, are ready to surprise opponents with this creepy logo. We aren’t quite sure what the monster is, but that’s the best part. Mystery surrounds this Columbus Blue Jackets affiliate, and opponents are left to wonder. The Monsters knew what they were doing when they created this logo. Fierce yellow eyes, peaking just above the waterline, give one awesome look. With the new name change from Lake Erie to Cleveland, I sure hope that a logo change isn’t to follow. The Monsters have a great look! I would hate to see that change. And I definitely hope nothing ever changes about this next American Hockey League team logo.

The Rockford IceHogs have, by far, my most favorite logo in all of the AHL. You probably wouldn’t think that such a tough looking animal could come out of Rockford, Illinois, but it did. This hog is ready to snap that hockey stick right in half. I bet it wouldn’t take much effort either. Honestly, the helmet is probably my favorite part. While meant to look like a hockey helmet, I’m sure, it gives off the black leather look of a hat that some kind of tough street thug would wear. The Chicago Blackhawks have one nasty looking IceHog as their minor league affiliate. Rockford, you have the best logo in the AHL! It’s definitely worthy of standing up against the best of the MiLB and D-League looks!

Even tougher than the IceHogs, Awesome Sports Logos has the Brooklyn Leg Breakers!

Are you talkin’ to me? The Brooklyn Leg Breakers play hockey, hard core style. If they could break through the ice and make you swim with the fishes, they would. This logo was inspired by the many New York mafia stories of old. We love the detail of this logo, including the pinstripes on the suit, the Brooklyn Bridge and skyline as the backdrop, as well as the NY lettering inside the tape of the stick. Forget about it, and pick up this awesome Brooklyn sports logo t-shirt today!

The Best NBA D-League Sports Logos

In a previous blog, I discussed the pure awesomeness of just a few, of many, Minor League Baseball logos. Those MiLB logos get quirky, funny and crazy! Well, those logos got me thinking. Do any other sports have minor league systems with logos just as great? Leave it to us at Awesome Sports Logos to do the hard investigative work! Today, I present you some of the best logos in the National Basketball Association’s Developmental League, better known as the D-League.

The Delaware 87ers, who go by the nickname “The Sevens”, are the D-League affiliate to none other than the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sevens definitely get cool points for the clever marketing strategy involved in the name of the organization. Now, about that logo. Is it super funny? Is it super awesome? Well, at first glance, one might say “no” to those questions. However, the eerie similarity that the Sevens logo has to the 76ers logo is hilarious. That similarity alone gives them my nod as one of the best NBA D-League logos out there. I wonder if anyone mistakenly purchased Sevens merchandise, intending to get 76ers gear? You can see the comparison below:

Now, on to a funny by design logo, featuring the Boston Celtics developmental team. The Maine Red Claws began playing in the 2009-2010 season. This expansion team came out of the gate with one crabby logo. Crabby as in their mascot looks grumpy! Maine is known for their spectacular seafood. It seems now that they’re working towards getting known for an awesome basketball logo. The lobster looks tough, and with basketballs at the ends of his antennae, we know he means business on the court! This developmental league logo definitely runs in line with some of the funnier Minor League Baseball looks!

This next team has, in my opinion, the best logo in all of the D-League. Now, before you scroll down to see what all the hype is about, let some of this imagery set into your mind. Ants. Mad ants. Mad ants running all over a basketball court, slamming the sweetest dunks and hitting the deepest three pointers. That, my friends, is what this next logo brings to the table. That’s right. The rest of the D-League should be cowering in fear to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants!

This developmental team to the Indiana Pacers, has THE best logo in the NBA’s D-League. Just look at this pure awesomeness! When you think about all of the team mascots and logos in the sports world today, you never suspected that ants would be the best in their class. The Mad Ants just flat did their logo the right way. Front and center is the main attraction. The angry head of this ant is followed by the body of a basketball. Surrounding the main image is a cool font, scripting out the team’s name. Congratulations Fort Wayne Mad Ants, you get this website’s award for BEST logo in the D-League. Everyone give a round of applause for the Mad Ants!

The award for best basketball logo here at Awesome Sports logos goes to the Caimanes de Rio Abajo of the Panamanian Basketball League.

I love it when local folklore turns into a sports logo. That's the case here because the residents of Rio Abajo swear they have seen Caimanes in the water although there has been no evidence that they are swimming in the local rivers. A Caimen is in the Alligator family but smaller. Don't get me wrong, not small enough to get near. We love how this logo is hovering over a basketball with the black and green colors. We also love our selection of Panamanian Basketball League t-shirts. Get all 5 logos for a discount price by joining our T-shirt of the Month Club. We promise people will be asking, "Where did you get that awesome t-shirt?"
