Savannah Goes Bananas For Baseball

Last month, we learned that “America’s Pastime” is heading back to the gorgeous city of Savannah Georgia.  After the departure of the Class A Savannah Sand Gnats to Columbia South Carolina, there was a void to fill at historic Grayson Stadium which was built in 1926. To put that in perspective, Fenway Park is only 14 years older and Wrigley Field is only 12 years it’s elder.  In other words, baseball, Savannah Georgia and Grayson Park go hand in hand.

In comes the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate invite only baseball league similar to the Cape Cod Baseball League and many others across the nation.  They needed a name so they teamed up with the Savannah Morning News to do a name our next team contest. This is quite common in the sports logo business, especially when it’s a fresh start because it creates chatter and gets people thinking. Most importantly, the community chose the name which creates even further embrace.

In a press conference, the team began by showing this video which reveals their new logo at the end.

The winner is The Savannah Bananas.

The team hired on Studio Simon out of Louisville, KY to create the logo and they did a great job!  Here’s what we love about it. You don’t see many fruit logos so when you do, it’s unique and fun. It appeals to the kids and the name is a perfect rhyming match with the city. Normally, we would take points off because we think it’s important to tie in a logo with that areas rich history but The Savannah Bananas has to be in the top 5 for roll off your tongue names.

Here are two of our baseball food logos, first the Dade City Kumquats.

And the Idaho Taters

It’s fun to create food logos that look like they are ready to jack one out of the park or in Idaho’s case, hit a “Tater”. Normally, we would take points off because we think it’s important to tie in a logo with that areas rich history but The Savannah Bananas has to be in the top 5 for roll off your tongue names. The green edging on the logo makes it stand out and the color scheme works for the logo and on merchandise. You can see from the social media reaction that people want this logo and that means it’s a winner.

One last interesting aspect is that the Savannah Anchors and the Savannah Ports were also finalists. That is so great to see because our Savannah baseball logo we created fits that mold. It's the Savannah Seamen.

In 2013, Savannah was the 3rd busiest port in our country. We think our funny baseball t-shirt fits right in with what Savannah is all about. We’re psyched that baseball is back in Savannah and we’re excited to see the city once again support their baseball. C’mon, Let’s Go Bananas!!

Sports Logo Spotlight on the Coastal Plain League

I love finding new sports logos. There are so many hidden gem sports logos in this world and today we highlight an entire league.  A while back, I did a blog on one of my favorite summer college leagues, the Cape Cod Baseball League. You can read that article here. Here is another summer collegiate league whose alumni include Justin Verlander, Kevin Youkilis, Ryan Zimmerman and Super Bowl winning quarterback Russell Wilson. They are just a few of the many pro athletes who have spent summers in the Coastal Plain League.

This year marks the 18th anniversary of the Coastal Plain League which has grown to 14 teams spread across Virginia and the Carolinas. Huge kudos to founder and league president Pete Bock who brought summer baseball back to this region. I really enjoy a lot of their logos because they are unique but have great local ties. Let’s look at a few of my favorites:

The Wilmington Sharks

Their slogan is “Take a Bite Out of Summer”. The ballpark nickname where they play is “The Shark Tank”. I love how they embrace their logo with this word play. I also love how they incorporate the shark logo in with the “W” on their lids.

To top it off, when you go to the “Shark Tank” you get to watch the game with “Sharky”, their mascot.

Columbia Blowfish

Baseball has an amazing history in Columbia and it continues with the Blowfish. I love the originality of this sports logo and the unique name. I can hear the chant now, “Here we go Blowfish, here we go!”

Wilson Tobs

What is a Tob? Baseball Reference.com tells us that Tobs is a nickname for Tobacconists. How old is the name? Well, back in the 60’s when they were a minor league team, Hall of Famer Rod Carew was a proud Tob. The Tobs mascot is a tobacco worm named slugger which is interesting because technically a tobacco worm would be considered an enemy of a tobacco farmer.

Edenton Steamers

This is the most delicious logo in the Coastal Plain League but I grew up on Steamers so I’m biased. I love food sports logos and it’s a restaurant favorite on the coast.  Go Steamers!

Peninsula Pilots

Originally named the Pilots in the early 70’s when they were the minor league of the Phillies, the name was brought back when they joined the Coastal Plain League in 2000. Food from the concession stands is known as “bird food”.  I really like how they got creative naming them the pilots with an Oceanside traveling bird wearing airplane goggles as their logo.

That’s a quick look at some of my favorite sports logos from the Coastal Plain League. The league is now on my list of things to do when I travel to that region. There are some other great logos in the Coastal Plain League and I’ve included a link here.  What started as an idea for a league has now turned into one of the most important summer collegiate leagues in the country. The love of baseball is back in this region. The logos are creative and original which many minor league teams across the country could learn from.

Speaking of unique baseball sports logos, we have a few that we feel that you will like. The Idaho Taters, Middleton Fingers and Decorah Trolls are on our list. If you are a baseball fan, you need to check out our awesome t-shirts.

Huge kudos to the Coastal Plain League. You guys are awesome! Thanks as always for reading.
